Flu Season is Upon Us! 10/16/2019

GET YOUR FLU SHOTS!!

  1. The vaccine does NOT cause flu.  EVER.  No matter what anyone else says or has told you.  You can get an immune response such as a low grade fever, mild inflammation, or local redness and tenderness.  This is a good thing.  It means your body is fighting the inactivated virus it has been exposed to and will build immune cells specific to fighting the virus.  This is the premise for getting the vaccine.  It takes 2 weeks for the vaccine to reach its maximum protectiveness.
  2. The vaccine does not cause stroke, autism, auto-immune diseases, or severe allergic reactions.  A small percentage of people's bodies do not react normally and therefore those people should not receive the vaccine.
  3. if you are healthy and feel you don't need the vaccine then you are able to choose to have it or not.  That is not the case for the elderly, immunocompromised and the newborn.  If you vaccinate you also protect those that are compromised from getting exposed.
  4. "the stomach flu" is not the flu at all.  Influenza is what the flu shot protects against.  Symptoms can be mild to severe and can cause death.  You may feel some or all of these symptoms and they usually start abruptly:

fever or feeling feverish/chills

cough

sore throat

runny or stuffy nose

muscle or body aches

headaches

fatigue

some may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children

EMERGENCY WARNING SIGNS OF FLU:

not urinating

cough that may improve but then worsens
